Creativity during a Think Day after a Zoom call compared with a 30-minute walk

Think Day

A revolutionary ritual for transformative thought

In a fast-paced world where quick fixes and instant gratification reign supreme, it is rare to find practices that encourage slowing down and introspecting. However, one such concept, pioneered in the 1980s by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, stands out: Think Week. Inspired by this idea, the Think Day offers a more accessible approach. This article introduces this powerful adaptation and explores its potential to transform the way you approach reflection, learning and personal development.

Origins of the Think Week

Bill Gates’s Think Week represented a radical departure from the typical executive routine. Each year, he would retreat to a secluded location and cut off communication. There, he could immerse himself in reading, learning and contemplative thought. Gates described it as a period for creativity and strategic thinking. As a result, he could step back from daily demands and focus on broader perspectives.

Inspired by this concept, Sahil Bloom, whose insights are shared through his free newsletter, adapted the Think Week into a more manageable format for those balancing career and family commitments. Bloom’s adaptation, which I’ve embraced and recommend wholeheartedly, is the Think Day.

The Think Day: a monthly ritual

The Think Day involves setting aside one day each month, or each quarter, to disconnect from routine professional tasks. In doing so, you create mental space for reading, learning, journaling and, most importantly, thinking.

To effectively implement the Think Day, consider the following steps:

  • Seclusion: Whether mental or physical, find a space where nobody will disturb you.
  • Disconnect: Turn off notifications and set up an out-of-office response.
  • Tools: Equip yourself with a journal, pen and materials you’ve been meaning to read.
  • Location: Choose a quiet spot, whether at home, at an Airbnb or outdoors.
  • Thought Prompts: Prepare questions to stimulate your thinking.

Six thought-provoking questions for your Think Day

  1. How can you focus on doing less, but better?
  2. Are your efforts directed at significant problems (hunting antelopes) or are they consumed by minor urgencies (chasing field mice)?
  3. What are your core beliefs, and what would make you reconsider them?
  4. For example, reflect on your past: What do you wish you had known five years ago?
  5. Consider your past actions: Which ones make you cringe, and how might your current actions be viewed in hindsight?
  6. What advice would your 80-year-old self give you about your choices today?

Implementing the Think Day

A practical approach to the Think Day is to carve out an 8-hour window, akin to a typical 9-to-5 workday. First, divide this time into focused 60-minute blocks and intersperse them with brief walks. Importantly, these walks aren’t mere breaks. Instead, they form a crucial component of the process by fostering creative and divergent thinking.

Therefore, remember the philosophy behind the practice: you have to slow down to speed up.

The benefits of slowing down

In an era obsessed with haste, we often overlook the advantages of decelerating. Therefore, the Think Day is not just a tool for self-improvement. Rather, it provides a gateway to a multitude of benefits:

  • Energy Restoration: Stepping back recharges your mental batteries and, consequently, can enhance overall productivity.
  • Heightened Awareness: A slower pace allows you to observe and appreciate nuances you might otherwise miss.
  • Deliberate Action: With greater clarity, your actions can become more purposeful and aligned with your long-term goals.
  • Leveraging Opportunities: By focusing on what truly matters, you can identify high-impact opportunities.

Moreover, slowing down creates space to examine the fears, habits and assumptions that influence our decisions. This reflective approach connects with the themes of authenticity and personal development explored in my review of Dancing with Monsters.

The Think Day as your secret weapon

For this reason, embracing the Think Day could be a game-changer in your personal and professional development. Above all, it is a strategy that promotes deep thinking and introspection, two key ingredients for substantial growth and success.

In an era where the world seems to spin faster each day, the Think Day stands as a testament to the power of pausing, reflecting and recalibrating. It is a practice that doesn’t just change how you spend your time. More importantly, it changes how you perceive and interact with the world.

Give the Think Day a try. It is more than a ritual. Ultimately, it is a journey towards a more thoughtful, insightful and impactful existence. Share your experiences and let us create a community of thinkers and innovators, transforming our world one day at a time.
